What I Learned From A Game of Solitaire.

July 5, 2010

Last night my daughter played Solitaire on the computer.  She asked me “Do you want to play?”  After I said, “Sure, it’s been years since I played so I may be a little rusty”  she said, “Just watch me, we’ll take turns.”

My daughter refreshed my memory on how to stack the cards up, but when it was my turn…I moved really slow!  When she saw me thinking really hard, she simply pointed out my next move.  She was really, really good at seeing exactly what to do next.

Once I played a few games, I started flying through the process of moving cards around, messing up some stacks so I could set up a complete row of cards in perfect order and get them out of the way.

Getting organized is exactly the same process.  When I work with clients I tell them we have to start somewhere.  We begin moving things around (seemingly making things worse, before they get better) so that we can complete one area and move on to the next.

When they get stuck or start thinking really hard, I am there to point out a simple move we can make to keep the organizing process going.  You see, I am not so rusty at helping others get organized.  Just like my daughter was not so rusty at the game of Solitaire.

Once my clients and I get in sync with each other we start flying through the process of moving things around.  It gets easier and easier to make decisions on removing what you do not need and arrange the items you decide to keep.  Amazingly, we clear an area.  Then we go another round.

Would you like to play a game of virtual Solitaire with me?

The Get It Done Yourself Coaching sessions work the same way.  We have a round together where I help point you to your next move, then you make moves on your own.  Then we go a few more rounds!  Before you know it, you aren’t rusty at all.  You are organized!
