Signs of Kinky Systems or Just A Big Misunderstanding?

April 24, 2012

Have you ever tried to set up systems, got frustrated, overwhelmed, didn’t stick to it and think, “I’ll just keep doing it this way and figure out a better way, later.”?  But, deep down you know you need to learn how to set up systems AND how to stick to them?

I feel your pain, I used to be the same way.  In fact, I would run the other direction when I saw or heard the word “systems.”   I was intimidated by the mere word.   A lot of my clients used to detest systems, too, until they figured this out…

Systems are your FRIENDS!

They can help you get things done waaaaaay faster and with less reliance on your memory.   No more popping vitamins to improve your brain function.  Actually, systems are pretty darn brilliant!!!

When you have great systems in place you’ll probably start noticing yourself…

  • spending more time with friends or family, and getting to know new people
  • peacefully focusing on activities that will grow your business…like reassessing current services, completing details of a new program, planning which events you’ll attend
  • doing even more of the things you love…without feeling guilty that you should be working (or cleaning something up!)
  • feeling confident that you’ve got everything under control and running smoothly
  • and my personal favorite, sleeping more!   (This lady’s gotta get her dreams on!!)

Here are a few signs of kinky systems (yep, something’s kinking up your flow)

DO ANY OF THESE SOUND FAMILIAR?

“Things are falling through the cracks.”

” I forgot I needed to do that.”

“I’m a slacker.  I’m not getting everything done and I should be able to do this.”

“I’ve got to find a more efficient, effective way to handle this.”

“I was so excited about my new system when I started using it, then something happened to throw me off track and I stopped using it.”

“I’ve tried so many different ways to organize and do things, but a lot of them don’t last for the long haul.”

“I’m not sure if I’ll ever figure it out.  I must be wired differently.”

Or maybe you just have a BIG misunderstanding of what a system is.

A system is just a fancy word that means you have steps in place to help you reach a goal.  When you use your system, then you are going through the process of doing one step, then the next step, then the next step, and so on… in an efficient order to CONSISTENTLY achieve a specific result.

The beauty of a system is that once you’ve set it up and worked out the kinks, then you can repeat the process over and over again.  And along the way, you can add or eliminate steps that will shorten the amount of time and energy it takes to arrive at the destination.

You may be sitting at the edges of some amazing systems!  I am willing to bet money that you’ve been investing time to put ‘em in place.  BUT…

Systems that aren’t working cause women to spend hours and hours and hours of extra physical and mental work, instead of freeing up that time to preferably do ANYTHING ELSE, except constantly making the same to-do lists week in and week out, trying to get everything done, but often feeling like you may never really catch up or get ahead.

You may want to use your energy doing much more inspiring, passionate, or pleasant things, but your brain may hop in and make you feel guilty, tell you that you can’t handle more, or worse, keep you stuck in the same place for, like, ever!   Did you go into your business to have extreme amounts of busy work or to have freedom over how you live your life?

So, you’re probably connecting with how important it is to set up systems that work FOR you and seeing them as your best friend, right?  Yay!!   Now, how do you do it?

Here’s how to get a system set up.

Make a master list of EVERYTHING that you do over & over & over & over again.

Now, pick the ONE task that you dread or procrastinate on completing and list ALL the steps you take to complete it.   Tweak it for efficiency over the next week or two.

You’ve got a step-by-step system!   It’s your friend, so use it to get started on a task, to keep you going, and notice  how you become a Get It Done MASTER with time to spare.

Or better yet…you’re ready to hand off the task to a personal or business assistant.

Bye, Bye Boring Chore!

What systems do you have in place that work beautifully?  Or which ones do you wish were easier?  Tell me in the comment section below.  I’ll pick some to include in my upcoming call on “Systems”, which I’ll announce via email soon!

(Pssst…The Spring Cleaning Program for Personal & Professional Blooming participants LOVED the call I did with them.  I’m still getting emails & comments about how much it helped them!)

I’m a fan of systems.

They are the key to how I move up the stack. If I have to figure out how to do my common routines, then I’m wasting time on low-value tasks.
